When we think about the ocean and coral reefs, we usually imagine colorful fish, sea turtles, rays, and large coral formations. However, there is another group of reef inhabitants that often goes unnoticed: sea sponges.
During a snorkeling excursion in Cancun or the Riviera Maya, you are very likely to swim past a sponge without realizing that you are looking at one of the oldest animals on the planet.
Yes, although they may look like plants, rocks, or even objects simply attached to the seafloor, sea sponges are animals. They belong to the scientific group known as Porifera, and there are thousands of different species throughout the world's oceans.
But what exactly are they? How do they feed? Where do they live? How long can they live? And why are they important to the reefs of Cancun and the Riviera Maya?
Let's find out.
Sea sponges are aquatic invertebrate animals with a body structure filled with tiny pores and channels. In fact, the scientific name Porifera roughly means "pore bearers."
Unlike animals such as fish, sponges do not have a brain, heart, nervous system, or complex internal organs. They also cannot move from one place to another once they reach adulthood.
So, how do they survive?
Their secret lies precisely in their structure.
Water constantly enters through the tiny pores in their bodies. Inside, specialized cells generate currents that allow water to flow through a network of channels. In this way, the sponge obtains oxygen and captures tiny food particles, including bacteria and microorganisms.
In other words, we can think of a sea sponge as a kind of natural ocean filtration system.

This is one of the most common questions.
Sponges are animals, not plants.
Their appearance can be misleading because they remain attached to the seafloor and do not move around like fish or sea turtles. In addition, some species have shapes that resemble plants, flowers, tubes, or bushes.
But biologically, they are animals.
There are approximately 8,500 known species of sponges, all belonging to the phylum Porifera. Most belong to the class Demospongiae, which represents approximately 90% of all living sponge species.
And there is something even more surprising: sponges have an extremely ancient evolutionary history. The fossil record of some types of sponges dates back approximately 600 million years.

Sponges can be found in virtually every ocean on the planet.
Some species live in shallow tropical waters, while others inhabit deep, cold areas of the ocean. There are also some species of sponges that live in freshwater.
On tropical reefs, sponges usually grow on hard surfaces such as rocks, dead coral structures, and other substrates. Some species can also live on soft sediments.
The Caribbean is particularly interesting when it comes to studying these animals. The Mexican Caribbean is home to a great diversity of sponges, and recent studies have documented as many as 150 species along Mexico's Caribbean coast.
This means that when you snorkel in the waters of Cancun, Isla Mujeres, or different areas of the Riviera Maya, the reef you are observing is not made up only of corals and fish. There is also an enormous community of smaller organisms that play essential roles in the ecosystem.

One of the most fascinating things about sea sponges is their incredible variety.

Some look like giant barrels, while others are shaped like tubes, cups, branches, or small crusts covering rocks. There are even sponges that look like tiny underwater sculptures.
That is why, during a snorkeling tour, it is worth taking a close look at the reef. A structure that may look like nothing more than a rock from the surface could actually be a colony of marine organisms living and growing on it.

Sponges are primarily filter-feeding animals.
They do not go out looking for food like a predatory fish. Instead, they take advantage of the natural movement of the water.
Water enters through their tiny pores and passes through a complex network of internal channels. During this process, sponges can capture bacteria and other microscopic particles that serve as food. They also obtain oxygen from the water and remove waste through the currents flowing through their bodies.
This process makes sponges an important part of how the reef ecosystem functions.

This question has an interesting answer: it depends greatly on the species.
There is no single life expectancy for all sponges. Some shallow-reef species can grow relatively quickly and live for several years, while certain deep-water species can live for decades, centuries, or even longer.
For example, research conducted on Caribbean reef sponges has estimated ages of approximately 5 to 10 years for large individuals of certain species, although longevity varies considerably between species and environments.
In deep-water environments, some sponges can reach much greater ages.
Therefore, it would not be accurate to say that "all sponges live for hundreds of years." Their longevity depends on the species, size, environment, and conditions in which they live.

Although they may not be as famous as corals, sponges perform essential functions.
First, they filter large amounts of water and participate in the processing of nutrients and organic matter. This helps support the functioning of the reef ecosystem.
In addition, their shapes and structures create small spaces where other marine organisms can find shelter. Small fish, crustaceans, and other invertebrates may use sponges as shelter or as part of their habitat.
Sponges also participate in important cycles involving elements such as carbon, nitrogen, and silicon, helping maintain fundamental ecological processes within marine ecosystems.
And there is even more.
Some species produce natural chemical compounds that serve as defenses against predators and microorganisms. These substances have also attracted the interest of scientists researching potential medical and pharmaceutical applications.

It is best to observe them without touching them.
Although some sponges may appear tough and resilient, they are living organisms and part of a delicate ecosystem. Touching them can damage their structure, break off parts of their bodies, or disturb the organisms living on them.
During a responsible snorkeling tour, one of the most important rules is to enjoy the reef without touching, collecting, or removing marine animals and organisms from the water.
This also applies to corals, starfish, sea urchins, fish, and other reef inhabitants.
A good photograph taken from an appropriate distance can be much more valuable than touching an organism that has spent years growing underwater.

When you visit Cancun or the Riviera Maya, remember that beneath the surface lies a world far more complex than what we can imagine from the beach.
The reefs of the Mexican Caribbean are home to a remarkable diversity of organisms, and sponges are an important part of this community. Scientific studies of the Mesoamerican Reef System have demonstrated the ecological importance of sponges on Caribbean reefs, including their participation in processes such as nutrient recycling, competition for space, and interactions with other marine organisms.
So, the next time you are snorkeling and see a yellow, orange, purple, or oddly shaped structure attached to the reef, stop for a moment and take a closer look.
It probably isn't a plant or a rock.
You may be looking at an animal that has been part of the history of our oceans for hundreds of millions of years.

In addition to tropical fish, corals, sea turtles, and other marine animals, the reefs hide fascinating creatures that often go unnoticed, such as sea sponges.
